A town's carnival parade has been shortened in time and its route changed.

Haltwhistle's carnival committee has announced a new route for the traditional parade which is returning on Sunday, July 9.

The decision that was made due to the changes of the town and safety of residents.

Organiser Jamie Pattinson said: "The applications for the event and road closure have to be applied for well in advance.

"At the time of making the decision about the procession route the working men’s club was still closed.

"The shorter route for 2023 will make the parade half an hour which would be done under S21 order which has no charge and will cost around £1,500.

Hexham Courant:

"The previous route would be over that amount of time so would be s16 order and costs £500 as it needs advertising.

"In addition to the cost of actually closing the road which would be between £2-£2.5k.

"We understand that charges have to be made for these events across Northumberland as it equates to a substantial amount of money.

"The starting point at Westlands is not great for wagons and trailers to get turned to join the procession.

"There is a lot of people, including children, everywhere and we need to think about the safety of pedestrians.

"There are 100s of spectators who watch the parade however we have noticed lots of gaps in various places along the previous route and condensing it down will make the shorter route accessible for walking groups and still allows for a big line of spectators.

"To ensure the longevity of the Haltwhistle carnival we need to make the logistics and organisation manageable for the size of the committee and the town.

"It will be reviewed for 2024.

"Although we regret not been able to use the main street, we have to view it as a solution to the carnival going ahead and it shouldn’t make a difference to our awesome parade.

"Over the coming weeks we will be posting new updates and exciting new events and we encourage people to follow us on Facebook for the latest updates."
