THE Lord Mayor of Newcastle has been welcomed by one of the North-East's oldest societies.

Cllr Karen Robinson, who was elected Lord Mayor in May, has accepted the role of ambassador at the Northumberland & Newcastle Society.

Cllr Robinson joins fellow ambassadors Her Grace the Duchess of Northumberland, The Lord Vinson LVO DL and The Lord Shipley OBE, at the society, known as the N&N.

The society aims to preserve the best of the region's architecture, landscape and culture.

It also bought and restored the Kielder Viaduct which now forms part of the Lakeside Way within the Kielder Forest Park.

“Our work is very much about ensuring we - and future generations - can enjoy our surroundings,” said chairman John Matthews.

“It’s not about standing in the way of progress; it’s about ensuring that we preserve the best aspects of our past as we look to the future.

“Lord Mayors of Newcastle have been closely involved with the society for almost 100 years and we are delighted to welcome Cllr Karen Robinson, who we know shares our love of this city and county.”

She added: “It is an honour and privilege to be invited to be an ambassador for the Northumberland and Newcastle Society and I am delighted to accept and continue the special friendship shared between the society and Newcastle City Council.

"I am also excited to get involved in some of the projects."
