CREW members from Allendale Community Fire Station will walk the length of Hadrian's Wall in less than two days to raise money for The Fire Fighters Charity.

On August 27, five of the crew will set off from Bowness-on-Solway at 8am and travel along Hadrian's Wall towards Wallsend.

Dave Stephenson, Dave Habberjam, Megan Coburn, Graeme Gowland and Matty Robson will be joined by friends Steve Blair, manager of Twice Brewed Inn, and co-worker Gus Oliver, along with Aiden Gillespie from Allendale, and potentially Graeme Binning, Deputy Chief Fire Officer of Northumberland Fire and Rescue.

They will complete the route in one go hopefully reaching Wallsend around 3pm on Sunday - and will be back to work by midnight.

Dave Stephenson said: "Being fire fighters, the charity is there to support us when we need help mentally or physically.

"We're trying to do one major event a year to raise money for them as the charity supplies us with all sorts of help, from physical to mental therapy for all firefighters and all personnel in the control room.

"We did the National Three Peaks Challenge last year which was quite challenging and we thought we'd step it up a notch with walking Hadrian's Wall end to end which is more than 84 miles."

During the Three Peaks Challenge, they raised approximately £6,500 through donations and GiftAid.

Dave said they have set themselves the target of £2,000 for this challenge - and have already raised several hundred pounds.

"It's a daunting prospect to complete within two days," he said. "The hardest bit is the middle section which is the bit we're doing in the middle of the night but we're excited to be doing a bigger and better challenge.

"People do the wall in seven or eight days but we're doing it non-stop in about 34 or 35 hours.

"We will have check-points every 10 miles to top up with water and food, change socks, whatever we need to do and then we'll be back on the trail.

To support their fundraising challenge, people can donate through their JustGiving link, at Allendale Co-op, or at the fire station.

"Leave us a message on our Facebook or come and see us, we'll be posting each check point, have a walk with us and keep our spirits up especially on the second day when we've got blisters and feeling down," said Dave.

"We give massive thanks to our supportive community, they've been absolutely amazing."
