A rabbit with no ears is up for adoption with its bonded mate.

Penny, a 2-year-old female rabbit, is currently up for adoption at Northumberland RSPCA with her bonded mate Roger.

Penny is a normal rabbit apart from one noticeable difference when compared to others.

She has no ears.

"Unfortunately, Penny's Mum chewed at her ears when she was a very young baby," said Laura Davies, from the Northumberland RSPCA team.

"This does not affect her life in any way at all and she is a very happy & healthy rabbit.

"Roger & Penny became instant best friends and very rarely leave each other's side now. They eat together as well and curl up with each other."

Roger and Penny are the many Rabbits at the Northumberland Branch after figures showed that pet stores saw a '200% increase' of rabbits being sold over the lockdown period.

The Northumberland branch had 15 rabbits handed over to them to rehome when owners could not look after them.

Trustee of the branch Jan Ormiston said: "Thankfully we have rehomed a few rabbits so we do not have 15 anymore but we still have a 'rabbit crisis' after many owners realise they are not an easy pet to have.

"We, therefore, ask for those who have experience with rabbits to come forward.

"They need more than feeding, as they need grooming and exercise too.

"Rabbits also enjoy any interaction with humans so owners who can put some spare time aside for them would be great."
