ANYONE thinking of taking in a football match need look no further than the Tyne Valley this weekend.

It’s derby day for the district’s Northern Alliance teams, with Haltwhistle Jubilee set to host local rivals Hexham in the George Dobbins League Cup on Saturday afternoon.

The eagerly-anticipated cup tie at the Burn will see underdogs Haltwhistle, who are flying high at the top of Division Two, take on a Hexham side who are an established Division One outfit.

Local pride will be at stake. The two sides have not met since last summer’s Clayton Cup final, when Haltwhistle got the better of Hexham during the pre-season competition.

Also on Saturday, two more teams from the district will lock horns in the same competition, when Premier Division Wallington welcome Prudhoe YC Seniors, of Division One, to their Oakford Park ground, at Scots Gap.

Both fixtures were originally scheduled to take place before Christmas, but were postponed as a result of adverse conditions.

And weather permitting, the weekend will mark a welcome return to action for all of the district’s football teams, following the festive break.

Elsewhere in the Northern Alliance, Premier Division Ponteland United will host Jesmond in another George Dobbins League Cup encounter, while Ponteland United Reserves will travel to Swalwell in the Northern Alliance Development Division.

There will also be a full programme of fixtures in the Hexham and District Sunday League.
