Royal Northern Sinfonia’s festive favourite, the Christmas by Candlelight concert series, is back for 2019, with performances in churches across the North-East staring today and running until December 11, including in Hexham Abbey on Tuesday, December 10.

Back for its fourth year – and this year bigger than ever with 10 concerts throughout the tour – Christmas by Candlelight sees the orchestra also visit Darlington, Durham, Alnwick, Richmond, Stockton, Rothbury, Carlisle, Cullercoats and Sunderland.

Each concert, complete with hundreds of candles, features Vivaldi’s much-loved Winter from The Four Seasons. Led by Tristan Gurney, the orchestra will bring to life its icy storms and cosy fireside melodies right on your doorstep.

The programmes also feature virtuosic concertos from the orchestra’s Richard Martin (trumpet), and Stephen Reay (bassoon), as well as classical favourites by Grieg.

With concerts selling out in previous years – and Cullercoats already sold out for this year – advance booking is strongly recommended. Tickets are available from Sage Gateshead’s box office in person, by calling (0191) 443 4661 or at
