HUNDREDS of canoeists will again make a splash on the River Tyne as a popular annual event returns from November 1 to 3.

The Tyne Tour, organised by Hexham Canoe Club, will start on Friday and run until Sunday, with various races and activities taking place during the event.

Many of the competitors will take the opportunity to pitch up tents on Hexham’s Tyne Green on Friday ahead of the main action the following day.

The highlight of the weekend is the Tyne Descent Race which starts at Barrasford and finishes in Hexham, via the challenging Warden Gorge. The race will get under way at 11am on Saturday.

While the race is ongoing, visitors will be able to take the chance to join in with a guided tour from Haydon Bridge to Hexham from 11am until 3pm .

Following the bonfire and fireworks display in Hexham, guests will return to Tyne Green for the annual ceilidh in a marquee with local band Whapweasel providing the musical entertainment.

The weekend will be brought to a conclusion with another race and guided tour on Sunday. A wildwater race from Wark to Barrasford will start at 10.30am, and a tour to Corbridge will set off at 11am.
