THE picturesque village of Bywell will become a hive of community activity this weekend.

Bywell Arts Festival celebrates its 20th anniversary this year and runs through the whole weekend, with an exhibition of art and crafts from around the region.

More than 200 paintings by 46 artists will be displayed in the twin churches of St Peter’s and St Andrew’s, with a people’s choice awarded on Sunday for the favourite piece of wall-hung art as voted for by visitors.

Meanwhile a food fair will take place from 12pm to 6pm on Saturday in the grounds of Bywell Castle.

As well as a variety of food and drink, available from more than 20 stalls run by local producers and vendors, there will also be musical entertainment provided by Whittonstall Community Band.

And on Sunday, Bywell Castle Gardens will be open to visitors from 2pm to 6pm as part of the British Red Cross Open Gardens Scheme.
