A CLASSICAL musician will return to his roots this week as he performs for audiences at Hexham Abbey.

A former student of the town and head chorister of the Hexham Abbey, cellist Laurence Hughes will perform with North Yorkshire musicians The Dales String Quartet in the place which he said he first found his passion for music and love for being on stage.

This will be Laurence’s first visit home since he left as a teenager to study at Manchester’s prestigious Chetham’s School of Music for the sixth form.

Since then, he has gone on to be director of StWilfrid’s Schola Cantorum in Ripon, and find success touring with The Dales String Quartet who are coming up as part of their sell-out concert series across the North.

The programme on the night will include music by many of the classical great composers including Haydn, Frank Bridge, Rachmaninov and Mendelssohn.

The concert will take place on June 1 at 7.30pm in the Great Hall. A donation from ticket sales will go towards Hexham Abbey’s Roof Appeal. Concert tickets are available now at the Abbey Gift Shop or on (01434) 603057.
