A CONCERT will be held to send junior choristers on a musical tour of Spain later this year.

Hexham Abbey Choir is inviting people along to a concert in the Abbey’s Great Hall tomorrow evening to raise funds for a trip to Malaga in October.

While admission to the event will be free, the choir is asking for people to leave donations on exit.

There are two junior choirs at the Abbey; the boys’ choir for those in school years three to nine and the girls’ choir for years four to 13.

Music at the fund-raising concert will include compositions by Mozart, Purcell, Rutter and Duruflé.

The Abbey’s director of music, Michael Haynes, said: “The music at the concert will be tunes people are familiar with. It’s more Classic FM than Radio 3.

“We plan to go to Malaga and we are very excited about it. Having been there myself recently, it is a wonderful place, with a wonderful cathedral, full of history. We went to Geneva, in Switzerland, last year and it was a great trip.

“For many, it is a trip of a lifetime and people will remember it for a long time. It is a mixture of singing and cultural visits, so it will be a great experience for our young choristers.”

The concert will start at 7pm, with drinks served from 6.30pm.
