SCHOOLGIRLS in Corbridge will sing with the country’s current top choir.

Corbridge Middle School’s chamber choir, recently renamed Corbridge Camerata, has been chosen to sing with Voices of Hope, declared champions of the BBC’s national Choir of the Year, when it visits the village at the weekend.

The choir has chosen St Andrew’s Church as one of only three venues to launch its new album A New Christmas, which includes newly-commissioned work from seven North-East musicians, including Bellingham’s Fiona Lander.

Joining the choir on Saturday evening will be girls who currently attend, or have recently left, Corbridge Middle School in Camerata. The concert will begin at 7.30pm.

Simon Davies-Fidler, musical director of Voices of Hope, said: “The North-East really has a thriving choral music community, so we’re hoping that this new set of works will also provide a new seasonal repertoire accessible for other choirs to use in their own Christmas programmes.

“As well as the brand new works, we’ve included new and less well-known arrangements of popular Christmas carols and songs so there are still things on the album that people will instantly recognise.”
