WHILE league results may not have been going their way, Newton B caused a shock to make the semi-finals of the Handicap Cup.

Up against Premier Division high flyers North East Chinese Association A, the Division One strugglers pulled off a great result in the quarters by batting their way to a 6-3 victory.

The signs looked ominous as they went 3-0 behind, but the team of Chas Robertson, Ian Armstrong and David Lucas battled back to set up a final four tie with Premier side Mount A.

Newton have two games left to move away from ninth in Division Three, following their latest defeat at the hands of Riding Mill B . Andrew Firth and Shirley Gelder won all three of their games and Maurice Cheek one as Mill recorded the 8-2 victory.

Gelder and Cheek defeated Robert Lawson and Robertson in the doubles, with Newton’s wins coming from Robertson and Lucas.

Matfen Senators played out a 5-5 draw in their close contest with Ouston B in Division Two. Man of the match Alex Holliday won all three of his games as well as the doubles alongside teammate David Swan, while Stephen Oxley won one of his singles.

Despite two wins for Peter Seago and one for Stefan Sobell, Matfen Whitley Chapel lost 7-3 at Cramlington Corinthians in Division Four. Things continued to worsen for divisional and club rivals Matfen Cohorts as the basement side forfeited their game at Brandon Anacondas.
