PRUDHOE Town’s impressive form in the Wearside League came to a shuddering halt as a second half capitulation saw them thumped 6-1 by Silksworth Colliery Welfare.

The Tyne Valley outfit had taken four points from two of the top three teams in the week leading up to the home fixture, but a devastating 25-minute spell by four-goal hero James Cook meant they couldn’t build on their momentum.

Having beaten third placed Richmond Town and drawn 0-0 with champions Jarrow, Prudhoe went into the game with Silksworth confident of causing another upset.

They suffered a setback on 17 minutes, though, when Adam Storey produced the game’s opening goal, only for Town’s man of the match striker Jack Barker to restore parity before the break. Prudhoe had been on top at that point, but a disastrous second half performance saw Silksworth win at a canter.

Storey was happy to score his second of the afternoon when he sent home a penalty after the break, but it was star man Cook who decided the game in the visitors’ favour as he scored four times in under half-an-hour. There was just one goal separating the teams as Prudhoe ended their campaign with a defeat to Hartlepool in midweek.

Tynedale Ladies still have a chance to break into the top three of the North East Women’s Premier Division after a comfortable 6-2 victory over Wallsend BC Ladies.

If they win their final game of the season with York City Ladies by three or more goals, they will clinch third spot – if Wallsend don’t win their final two games by larger margins.

Their chances were boosted by a fantastic victory over fifth placed Wallsend, coming from behind for the victory.

Christine Murray got the comeback started before Jane Riddell scored a quick fire hat-trick to put Tyne 4-1 ahead.

Siobhan Simpson extended the lead with Ashley Lambert rounding off the scoring after Wallsend hit back with a consolation.

It’s winner takes all when Ponteland United Reserves head to Cramlington Town Reserves on Saturday.

Ponteland’s 4-1 win over Stobswood Welfare means they are two points ahead at the top of the Tyneside Amateur League, with the teams to meet at the weekend in a crunch decider.
