A WALKING football team based at Hexham’s Wentworth Leisure Centre is heading for Majorca.

The six-a-side team Wentworth Wanderers will compete against the likes of Hull, Leyton Orient and Feyenoord in the Majorca Walking Football Tournament.

The competition is for people over the age of 55, and Hexham player Max Hamps is looking forward to the challenge.

He said: “We’ve been going for two years this summer, and we have a great set-up here.

“It is great to get to tournament standard. We play indoors at Wentworth, but it will be a bit different in Majorca because we’ll be on 4G outdoor surfaces.

“I want people to know that walking football is a great way to keep fit and active, and also for those who are recovering from an illness.

“We’ve had people of all ages playing here, right up to the age of 80.”

The Majorca tournament is a mixed event, although Hexham’s team is made up of male players.

Max added: “At present we don’t have any women players, but they would be most welcome.

“Anyone who has ever thought about trying a game of walking football should come along and give it a go.”
