A CRUSHING second wicket stand of 182 runs between Lanchester pair Graham Brinton and Sam Crooks left Tynedale stunned.

The batsmen's prolonged ambush blunted every attempt on their wickets from the pace bowling of Matthew Percival, Sam Peter and Josh Renton, and the medium and slow paced deliveries of Tom Cant an Paul Newton on their way to a comprehensive nine wicket victory.

It wasn't as if Tynedale hadn't posted a challenging score as they put on 200 in their innings. Rather it was the sublime batting performance from opener Brinton and Kiwi Crooks which left the home side shell shocked.

It was fitting that man of the match Crooks should hit the winning runs to reach his century, pulling a shot for six over mid-wicket to follow up an impressive day with the ball as he grabbed three wickets.

They found runs easy to come by as they both hit over the top when the field was brought in and seized on the frequent friendly balls to guide their team to victory in just short of two hours.

Tynedale batted first and were in good form, openers Cant and Sam Mannion putting on 87 for the first wicket to get them off to a good start.

However both departed within quick succession of each other with Cant trapped lbw by former Tyne man Callum Barnes and Mannion, having passed 600 league runs for the season, swiped at a ball from Kieron Taylor which was caught by Stuart McPhail at mid-off.

Before he was sent on his way, Mannion made his fourth 50 of the year with his knock coming off 73 balls, which included two sixes and four fours.

James Rainford made little impression as he departed for the third wicket with the score on 90, clipping a catch to the diving Dan Storey in the slips for Taylor's second wicket.

Jamie Crichton and Ollie Fletcher added 45 for Tynedale's fourth wicket, the former adding most of these runs with a broad side of crisp hitting despite being dropped at 30.

The partnership was ended when Fletcher attempted a second run, but being run out with the score at 135.

Tynedale wobbled again as they lost three wickets for just one run, Euan Stephenson, Crichton and Hedley Renton all departing.

The late rearguard came in the form of Josh Renton and Newton as they made 39 for the eighth wicket, Renton showing late season form with the bat by hitting four fours in his almost run-a-ball 24 before caught behind by Nathan Somersall off Crooks.

The New Zealander, who had Crichton caught by Brinton two runs shy of his half ton, made it three wickets for the day when he bowled Newton for the ninth wicket, with Percival and Peter seeing out the overs to finish on 201.

Brinton and Mark Small started the chase for Lanchester, but the latter was run out by Rainford after 10 minutes of play.

It proved a temporary setback for Lanchester as Brinton and new man Crooks soon stamped their authority on the innings, Brinton overcoming a tricky spell from Percival and Crooks avoiding the fielders expertly.

Tynedale II look set to miss out on a coveted top six finish in Division B1 ahead of the reorganisation of Northumberland league cricket next season.

Despite a half century from the evergreen Richard Darling, they couldn't overcome Lanchester with their hosts chasing down Tyne's total of 182 with seven wickets to spare.
