Corbridge make it two in a row as they defeat Berwick

Batting first, the hosts closed on 229-6 from the allotted 50 overs with opener M.Liebenberg (85) top-scorer.

In reply, the first six Corbridge players to the crease all reached double figures with the highlight being Joe Anderson's century.

He scored 105 from 88 balls including 16 boundaries. Appropriately, run machine Jacques Du Toit (14 not out) saw the visitors across the line in the 47th over with five wickets in hand.

In Division One, Matfen got back to winning ways at Backworth.

The main contributors in their total of 227-6 were opener Kamran Mansoor (108) and No.7 Amir Riaz (67 not out).

Backworth were soon struggling on 10-3 before eventually being dismissed for 167 in the 46th over with Abubakar Maqsood, Hashir Khan and Mohsin Iqbal all taking three wickets.

Also in Division One, it proved to be a bad day at the office for Stocksfield who lost by 194 runs at home to second-placed Swalwell.

After being put in to bat, the visitors' star performer was opener Daniel Stanley (173 from 124 balls including 16 boundaries and eight sixes). He received good support from Owen Shield (56) and Finlay Hansford (57 not out) before the innings closed on 313-5, with Sam Beedle (3-49 off 12 overs) the pick of the bowlers.

In reply, Beedle (50) top-scored for the hosts who collapsed from 103-5 to 119 all out in the 33rd over, with the first five wickets all taken by Matthew Hughes.

In Division Four South, Stocksfield 2nd XI won by three wickets in a low-scoring contest at Whickham.

Batting first, the hosts were dismissed for 95 in the 33rd over with most of the damage done by Lawrie Cope (4-22 off seven overs) and Jack Wraith (4-27 off nine overs).

Chasing a modest target, Stocksfield didn't have things all their own way and were indebted to opener Oliver Napier (38 not out) who held the innings together while wickets fell at regular intervals at the other end before they got across the line in the 19th over with three wickets in hand.

The scorers were kept much busier at Wylam where the hosts won by 111 runs against Haltwhistle. Alex Rayner (49) and James Teasdale ((65) were the main contributors in Wylam's total of 256-9 before the South Tyne visitors were all out for 145 in the 44th over with all six bowlers among the wickets.

In Division Five South, Stamfordham opener Ciaran Murphy (99) shared a second-wicket stand of 173 with James Atkinson (67) in their total of 208-7 from the allotted 40 overs.

In reply, Greenside were restricted to 185-8 with George Devine (3-34 off nine overs) the pick of the quintet of bowlers used by Stamfordham who remain second in the table.

Newton are only five points behind Stamfordham after a sixth win in seven games at Corbridge.

Brian Taylor, Dan Taylor and Stephen Pitman all took three wickets as the hosts were dismissed for 72 in the 31st over, before Dan Taylor (45 not out) guided Newton to victory in only 13.1 overs with seven wickets in hand.

Almost 500 runs were scored at Matfen where a run out off the last ball of the hosts' innings secured an unlikely tie for Blaydon.

The visitors were indebted to opener Kevin Noon (126 from 106 balls including 20 boundaries and two sixes) as they closed on 249-3.

Valuable knocks from Andy Snowdon (65) and Toby Pilkington (41) left Matfen well placed for victory on 221-6 until the last two wickets fell with only one run needed to win.

Humshaugh picked up a much-needed win at home to basement side Gosforth Strikers and are now only four points behind third-bottom Newcastle Super Kings.

Chasing the visitors' total of 210-6, Humshaugh's batting star was opener Hedley Renton (110 not out) with Will Forster (43) and the bonus of 49 extras ensuring an early finish as the target was reached in the 30th over with eight wickets in hand.

In Division Six South, promotion-chasing Stocksfield 3rd XI won by one run in a nail-biting finish at Benwell & Walbottle to leave them six points behind second-placed Lintz.

Daniel Hunter (90) top-scored for the visitors in their total of 216-9, and the hosts still required two runs for victory with four wickets in hand when the overs ran out.

Newbrough captain Bertie Spence (54) was again in good form in his side's latest win by 81 runs at Allendale in Division Six West.

The other main contributors in their impressive total of 254-6 were Graeme Robbie (72) and James Gibbons (68), before Poppy Forster (5-26 off nine overs) starred with the ball for the league leaders as Allendale were restricted to 173-5.

The highlight of the hosts' innings was a fifth-wicket stand of 133 between Graeme Pigg (52) and Isaac White (62 not out).

In Division One of the North East Premier League, visitors Newcastle City inflicted a fourth defeat in a row on Tynedale in yet another high-scoring match at Priors Flat.

After losing the toss and being put in to bat, the hosts closed on 246-7 from 58 overs with the highlights being a fifth-wicket stand of 64 between Ted Fletcher (71 not out) and Ed Foreman (54), and a seventh-wicket stand of 54 between Fletcher and Aaron Rourke (18).

In reply, Hamzah Amin (73) led Newcastle City's fightback after they had slumped to 9-3 with victory sealed in the 48th over by an unbroken sixth-wicket stand of 85 between Shafqat Ullah (83 not out) and Ahmed Abdullah (41 not out).

Rounding off a memorable week, Bertie Spence scored a century for Tynedale 3rd XI in their North East Premier League Sunday Second Division North match at Priors Flat against Felling Academy.

His impressive knock of 110 not out from 98 balls including 14 boundaries and two sixes took his tally of runs to 321 in his last four innings.
