Still with plenty to do in sixth place on the home turn, the Jennie Candlish-trained Galileo gelding then engaged top gear and picked off his rivals one by one before taking it up inside the final half-furlong.

The seven-year-old won, going away, by one-and-three-quarter lengths from Droitwich raider Jubilee Gold (Luke Scott), with Kopa Kilana (Charlie Price) a further two-and-a-quarter lengths away in third.

The latter was claimed after the race for £6,000 by Oliver Jack Murphy.

Quinlan doubled up on last month's Hexham scorer Kicksaftersix in the 3m Harry Douglas Estate Agency Handicap Chase.

After being patiently ridden towards the rear, the nine-year-old made steady headway from three out to lead after the last and stayed on strongly to beat Community Rebel (Ryan Mania) by three lengths, with the improving C'est Quelqu'un (Alan Doyle) a close third.

All three career wins for Martin Todhunter's charge have come at Hexham, and he has the scope to defy another rise from the handicapper on his next visit.

Back in calmer waters after running at Aintree last month, the seven-year-old made smooth headway on the outer, coming up the hill after two out to dispute the lead at the last before drawing clear in the final furlong to beat Smokeringinthedark (Danny McMenamin) by a comfortable two-and-three-quarter lengths.

Former 152-rated hurdler First Street, who raced against the likes of State Man and Jonbon in 2022, ended a long losing run when defying top weight in the valuable 2m4f L&R Pest Control Services Novices' Limited Handicap Chase.

Given a positive ride by Brian Hughes, Nicky Henderson's charge made virtually every yard of the running, and kept finding a bit extra when the chips were down in the closing stages to score by one-and-a-quarter lengths from Halpha Soleil (Jamie Hamilton).

Hughes said: "He's a nimble jumper, but would ideally prefer a sounder surface.

"It was great to get the chance to ride for Nicky again with stable jockey Nico de Boinville injured, and usual replacement James Bowen in action at Punchestown."

After being well beaten on his two previous starts over fences at Newcastle in March, Cave Hill (Alan Doyle) turned the form book upside down with a surprise victory in the 2m4f The Neigh Way Laura Stewart's 60 Handicap Chase.

The six-year-old set a steady pace from the outset and, after being headed on the home turn by Am Still Here (Sean Quinlan), rallied to lead again after the last, and did just enough to keep his rival at bay by half-a-length after a sustained duel in the final furlong.

The unfancied Tartan Cookie (Danny McMenamin) came up trumps for the in-form Ewan Whillans yard in the first division of the 3m Greenhead Hotel Handicap Hurdle Race.

He rallied well from two out to head Killybegs Jet Lady (Alan Doyle) inside the final furlong and held on gamely to score by one-and-a-quarter lengths.

Following a below par effort at Catterick on New Year's Day, Robert d'Ores (Jonathon Bewley) bounced back to form with a second course win in the second division of the 3m Greenhead Hotel Handicap Hurdle Race.

Getting a clear run all the way on the outer, the eight-year-old picked off his rivals one by one on the final circuit under a well judged ride before taking it up approaching the last.

He met it well, landed running and stayed on strongly to beat Cumbrian rival Dreamings Free (Charlie Price) by one-and-three-quarter lengths, with Newmarket raider Tarbat Ness ((Jack Quinlan) a further half-length away in third after failing to get on terms with the leaders over this longer trip.

The next two meetings at Hexham are on Saturday, (First Race at 4.05pm) and Tuesday, May 20 (First Race at 5.58pm).

In addition, the course hosts the Haydon Point-to-Point fixture on Saturday, May 17.
