Sunderland have submitted a deadline day bid for a new striker, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has confirmed.

The Italian journalist shared the news on Twitter that the Black Cats have officially bid for AA Gent forward Ahmed Abdullahi, and talks are now ongoing, ahead of this evening's deadline.

The 20-year-old forward hit 21 goals in 38 appearances for Gent's academy side last season but has managed just two substitute appearances for the first team, since joining from Nigerian side HB Abuja.

Régis Le Bris' side have scored seven times in their first three Championship fixtures, without reply, and sit top of the league at the time of writing.

However, the loss of Jack Clarke to Premier League new boys Ipswich Town is sure to be a significant blow in the attacking department, and it seems clear that attacking reinforcements are required before the window closes.

Abdullahi would certainly fit Sunderland's profile of signing exciting young talent from abroad, and the striker could be another shrewd addition at the Stadium of Light this summer, if a deal can be completed today.
