Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing a wonderkid from their closest rivals.

GiveMeSport report that the Toon are keen on Sunderland youngster Chris Rigg, following the 16-year-old's impressive start to the season for Tony Mowbray's side.

The midfield sensation recently became Sunderland's youngest-ever league goalscorer when he added the fifth goal in a rout of Southampton before the international break.

Rigg has two goals in five senior appearances for the Black Cats, despite only turning 16 in June, so looks to have a huge future ahead of him.

Whether that will be at the Stadium of Light remains to be seen, as Newcastle will face competition from Manchester United for his signature, as GiveMeSport suggest that Erik ten Hag's side are also keeping tabs on the talented teen.

Of course, the summer transfer window has now closed but an approach could be on the cards in January, especially if Newcastle are to continue their philosophy of signing promising youngsters for the future, as we saw with Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall joining the club during the summer.

Sunderland will be desperate to keep hold of the midfielder given his obvious potential but if Mowbray's side fails to achieve their aspirations of returning to the Premier League, then a move to St James' Park could prove difficult to turn down for Rigg.
