A POPULAR sporting event will take place this weekend.

Prudhoe Plodders Running Club (PPRC) are delighted to be organising the Prudhoe Miners Race for the third year, on behalf of Prudhoe Town Council.

The club has seen entry numbers increase this year.

The race is also sponsored by Essity Prudhoe. This is a historic race of Prudhoe, once popular with members of the town's Working Men's Clubs.

The race, which is a 5-mile UK Athletics road race, will take place on Sunday, September 3 at 9am.

The route starts and finishes in Eastwoods Park. There is a Junior 2km race starting at 8.30am through the residential streets of West Wylam.

Although race entries are closed there are a handful of 'on the day' entries available. To join in, go to Race Registration, which is a tent situated outside The Miners Lamp Cafe in Eastwoods Park, from 7.30am on Sunday morning to secure a space.

There will be some road closures between 8.30am-11am on Sunday. Check the club's Facebook page or Prudhoe Town Council website for further details.

Organisers are hoping closures will be minimal, as they will operate a 'rolling road closure system' which means the roads will be re-opened by the Traffic Management Company once the runners have passed.

Organisers are encouraging everyone around the route to cheer the runners on and embrace the atmosphere.

A spokesman for main sponsor Essity said: “We’re proud to once again support the Prudhoe Miners Race, which has been a fixture in the local events calendar since 2012.

“When the Town Council decided to resurrect this historic race and help mark the London Olympics, nobody had any idea how successful it would become. But as a global hygiene and health company, we were keen to get involved.

“Popular with runners of all ages and abilities, it encourages families to enjoy the benefits of healthy outdoor activities – and race organisers the Prudhoe Plodders have done a fantastic job of making it something of which the whole town can be very proud.”
