Sunderland crashed out of the Carabao Cup in the first round on Tuesday evening after a disappointing defeat to Crewe Alexandra.

16-year-old Chris Rigg became the club's youngest-ever goalscorer when he cancelled out Luke Offord's opener but with the scores level after 90 minutes, the game headed to penalties.

On-loan goalkeeper Harry Davies proved to be the hero for the League Two outfit as he kept out Pierre Ekwah's tame penalty before Ryan Cooney scored the Railwaymen's fifth spot-kick to claim the victory.

Tony Mowbray responded to last weekend's 2-1 defeat against Ipswich Town by making 10 changes to his side, with just Dan Neil keeping his place in the starting XI.

This meant debuts for summer signings Nathan Bishop and Nectarios Triantis, but neither will remember this clash with Crewe fondly.

In a lacklustre first half, Alex Pritchard would come closest to a Sunderland opener, but his free-kick was comfortably kept out by the impressive Davies.

The away side then shocked the Stadium of Light with a smash-and-grab opening goal, with Offord able to head in from Joel Tabiner's corner.

Mowbray responded with a half-time triple substitution which saw Bradley Dack and youngster Ben Crompton come on for their respective debuts.

It was another youngster in Rigg who stole the show, however, as he provided a confident finish after the away side failed to clear Jack Clarke's cross, to become Sunderland's youngest goalscorer in history, just 51 days after his 16th birthday.

Another substitute in Ekwah came the closest to finding a winner when his long-range strike came off the post, while Dack was denied a debut goal when his volley was kept out by Davies late on.

The visitors posted a perfect penalty record to seal the win, as Ekwah's poor spot-kick proved decisive.

After two defeats from two, Mowbray's side will be looking to bounce back on Saturday, when they travel to Preston North End.
