Elliot Anderson was the hero for Newcastle United on Saturday as they came back to beat Brighton & Hove Albion 2-1 in the final game of the Premier League's USA summer series.

After draws against Aston Villa and Chelsea in their first two fixtures, Eddie Howe's side finished their tour of the States with a late triumph against the Seagulls to earn the third spot in the group.

The Toon opted for a much-changed side for the game, with the likes of Alexander Isak, Sandro Tonali, and Sven Botman all rested, which no doubt helped a strong Brighton side dominate much of the proceedings.

Roberto de Zerbi's men, who are also set to enjoy a spell in Europe in the upcoming season, had 66% of the ball at the Red Bull Arena and controlled the first half, with Adam Lallana firing narrowly wide of Nick Pope's goal when he should have scored.

It wouldn't take the south coast outfit long to open the scoring in the second half however, as the dangerous Kaoru Mitoma danced past Harrison Ashby before cutting the ball back for Danny Welbeck to tap in at the far post on 49 minutes.

Pope then produced a fine save to deny Facundo Buonanotte on the counter, and Newcastle would grow into the game after that, with Callum Wilson clipping the crossbar after a smart through ball from Jacob Murphy.

Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen would gift Anderson with a golden chance to equalise but atoned for his error with a strong hand to the midfielder's effort.

The Dutch shot-stopper could do very little about Anderson's equaliser however, as he stole in between two day-dreaming defenders to smash in a close-range shot on 86 minutes.

There was still time for the academy graduate to win it in added time, as he raced onto a long ball over the top and shrugged off the Brighton defender, before curling a perfect finish into the bottom corner.

The 20-year-old will now surely be considered for Newcastle's Premier League opener against Aston Villa in two weeks' time, although the Toon do still have two games to come at St James' Park before the big kick-off.

Fiorentina and Villarreal are the visitors this weekend, with the games kicking off at 3:30 pm and 4 pm on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
