Back-to-back wins sees Tynedale Ladies sit in second place in the Northumberland Women’s Hockey ‘A’ League after a thrilling 1-0 victory against a strong Whitley Bay and Tynemouth 3s.

An action-packed game saw both sides call on their defence at key moments to keep out threatening attacks, and it was the Tynedale defence, made up of Sue Crawford, Emma Sanderson, May Thomas and Marianne Murphy, who were rock solid once again - consistently preventing Whitley Bay from threatening the goal.

Their timely tackles and great distribution of the ball set up some exciting counter attacks, but despite all the action, neither side scored before half time.

With the game hanging in the balance, the second half was played at an even greater pace. The energetic midfielders Alison Westworth, Francesca Dent, Tasha Berkley and Jessie Combe proved key - battling hard to intercept and create opportunities for the forwards.

In attack, Hattie Brown, Laura Gray, Lizzie Scott and Cara Lee wreaked havoc on the Whitley Bay defence- carving them apart with their speed and slick passing.

With five minutes to go, after a break down the left wing, Scott picked out Lee in the ‘D’ whose brilliant reverse stick strike thundered into the goal to give Tynedale the lead.

With a minute to go, drama ensued with Tynedale successfully defending five back-to-back penalty corners adding an extra eight minutes to the game.

Tynedale's defence put their bodies and sticks on the line, and were supported by another ‘Player of the Match’ performance from goalkeeper Nicky Baguely. Tynedale finished with the win and will feel buoyed by yet another classy performance.
