THERE were mixed fortunes for golfer Matty Lamb after his low scoring exploits in Australia.

The Hexham Golf Club member excelled during the strokeplay stage of the Australian Amateur Championship in Brisbane.

Lamb followed his opening round of 75 with an outstanding 65 - which was the lowest round of any player in the tournament during the week - and earned him ninth place in the strokeplay standings.

For his round of 65, Lamb was eight under par after 10 holes, before the heavens opened, and he did well to card a seven-under score in the conditions.

He qualified for the matchplay stage, before bowing out of the tournament in the third knock-out round.

Nevertheless, Lamb reached the last 16 against a high level of opposition, while battling an injury.

As a result, he will sit out this week's New South Wales event, in a bid to be fully fit for next week's Avondale Invitational.

Lamb is Down Under until the beginning of February. He is not in areas of Australia affected by the ongoing bush fires.

Next month his schedule includes events in Portugal and Spain.

In December, Lamb was named sportsman of the year at the Sport Tynedale Awards, and also received the Tynedale Trophy for overall adult champion.
