A SECOND half Greg Irwin strike saw Haltwhistle Jubilee get the better of local rivals Hexham in round three of the George Dobbins League Cup on Saturday.

The two Northern Alliance sides locked horns at the second time of asking, after the original fixture was postponed due to wintry conditions two weeks ago.

Home side Haltwhistle won 1-0 at the Burn, with Irwin finishing neatly from an acute angle in the 76th minute.

The victory was a coup for the Division Two league leaders, against a Hexham side established in Division One.

Both sides contributed to what was an entertaining cup tie, which warmed a healthy crowd on a chilly afternoon.
