GIRL rugby teams from Tynedale Panthers have been crowned county champions in two different age categories.

The Corbridge-based club’s U15 and U18 sides won their respective Northumberland stages of the RFU National Cup.

The achievements will see both teams progress into the quarter-finals of the north region stage, which will take place on Sunday, January 12.

Both teams have been handed draws against U15 and U18 outfits from Ryton, which is classed as a County Durham club by the RFU.

Coach Nick Oliver said: “Both teams have won the county stage of the RFU National Cup, which is also the county cup.

“It’s the first time in recent years that our two teams have been county champions in the same season. The girls have done very well.”

The group stages of the county competition saw the Tynedale teams remain unbeaten in their three respective games.

It’s been another good year for the Panthers, with several players having trials for Northumberland U15. Tynedale have also been represented at both England U18 and U20 level. Back in May, the Panthers won the U15 Northumberland Sevens Festival, when they also got the better of sides from across Northumberland.

It saw them complete a remarkable treble season, having also won sevens festivals in Durham and Yorkshire.
