A TALENTED young footballer from Ponteland High School is set to link up with Newcastle United next season.

Year 11 pupil Max Thompson has been offered a football scholarship with the Magpies.

The accolade is an impressive achievement for the goalkeeper, who has been taking part in day release sessions with the Premier League club.

Headteacher Kieran McGrane said: “Max is a fantastic young man who has combined day release at Newcastle United with maintaining a keen focus on his academic studies. He is a delightful student who is humble and modest about his sporting achievements.

“Max can now set his focus on preparing well for his GCSE exams next year, knowing that his immediate future is secure. We wish him all the very best.”
