PRUDHOE YC Seniors survived a late spell of pressure to reach the quarter-finals of the Northumberland Minor Cup.

The Northern Alliance Division One side defeated Blyth, from the division below, 2-1 on Saturday, in a home game with a difference.

Prudhoe share their Kimberly Park ground with Northern League Division Two outfit Newcastle University.

And with the latter occupying the venue, Prudhoe were provided with an alternative pitch within university grounds.

Prudhoe and Blyth were evenly matched in the opening stages, with several half chances at both ends, but neither goalkeeper was sufficiently tested.

The Seniors found a breakthrough on the hour mark. A long throw from Danny Driver was partially cleared away by the goalkeeper, but the ball fell to Ste Forster who volleyed home from 12 yards.

A second goal for Prudhoe followed 10 minutes later. Brad Rogers picked out Matty Robinson, who took a touch before firing a rocket of a shot into the back of the net.

The game changed on 80 minutes when Mark McMeekin attempted to clear the ball, only to slice it past his own keeper from 20 yards to reduce the deficit.

Blyth piled on the pressure in the closing stages, but they couldn’t find an equaliser.

Prudhoe YC Seniors’ club secretary Duncan Graham said: “This was a hard fought win against a good Blyth side, and credit to them for giving it their all.

“We’re happy with the win and it’s nice to see us join both Hexham and Haltwhistle in the quarter-finals.”
