SPECTACULAR one-handed catches were the order of the day during an indoor cricket tournament in Hexham.

The annual West Northumberland U13 boys’ indoor tournament took place at the town’s Wentworth Leisure Centre, with a place in the county finals at stake for the winner.

Five middle schools took part with Prudhoe’s Highfield Middle, Ovingham Middle, and Hexham’s St Joseph’s RC Middle winning one game each from their four matches.

Corbridge and Hexham middle schools were both on three wins going into their match in the final round of the day.

Hexham Middle batted first, finishing on 86 all out from their eight overs.

In reply, Corbridge reached their target losing just one wicket to progress to the county finals, which are set to take place tomorrow.

Sam Gilbert, of of St Joseph’s, was voted player of the day by the teachers.

West Northumberland cricket development officer Tom Cant said the day was an extravaganza of cricket, with plenty of boundaries hit, accurate bowling, as well as diving stops and numerous one-handed catches.

He added: “It was another fantastic tournament with the players all enjoying themselves, which is the most important aspect of the day.”
