NORTH-EAST sports stars from the past and present were at Matfen Hall Golf Club to open its new £5m floodlit driving range.

European Tour golfer Kenneth Ferrie was joined by Newcastle United defender Paul Dummett, and Olympic champion triple jumper Jonathan Edwards at a special launch event.

The investment in new floodlights will enable the popular driving range to remain open until 8pm during the winter months, on Monday's Wednesdays and Fridays, for practice and lessons.

Matfen Hall’s director of golf Lisa Ferrie said the move was to improve the experience for members and visitors, at a club which also offers a par three course, and a short game practice area.

Paul Dummett said: “I think it is great that I can practice my golf at any time especially now the dark nights are here.”
