PRUDHOE YC Seniors moved up to second place in Northern Alliance Division One after an emphatic display at home to Blyth Spartans Reserves.

The red and blacks went into the game just a point ahead of the North Northumberland side, and supporters at Kimberly Park were expecting a nail-biting contest.

But Prudhoe came out of the blocks flying, and never looked back.

Pressure high up the field from the hosts led to a defensive error. Matty Robinson capitalised, and he cut inside from the left to fire a shot into the bottom left corner after just two minutes.

The Seniors doubled their advantage on the half hour mark. Sam Dibb-Fuller fed the overlapping Darren Graham down the right, and his cross-cum-shot was deflected into the net.

It was 3-0 just eight minutes later as the hosts continued to dominate proceedings. After a cross from the right, the ball fell to Ryan Burnyeat, who lashed it home from 12 yards.

Prudhoe went into half time with their heads up, and they came out for the second period in the same vein. On 55 minutes, Frazer Briggs scored to complete a tremendous team move.

Burnyeat and Robinson linked up on the right side, before the ball was laid off for Briggs, who made the goalkeeper work, before finishing neatly with his right foot. At 4-0 down, Blyth refused to lie down, and ensured Prudhoe’s 16-year-old goalkeeper Thomas White wasn’t just a spectator during his full debut.

They reduced the deficit to 4-1 on 65 minutes, and the young keeper, who had made two good diving saves during the first half, won a one against one duel in the 70th minute. The visitors scored a second in the 92nd minute, which proved to be a consolation goal.

Prudhoe YC Seniors’ club secretary Duncan Graham said: “Blyth are a good side and, at the start of play, this was fourth against fifth in the league. Our players were up for the game, and they smashed it really. It was a good, committed, wholehearted performance which was full of good football. All of the lads did well, and it was pleasing to see young Thomas make a good impression on his full debut.”
