ONE of the district’s promising young rugby stars is embarking on a new adventure in Leicestershire.

Former Tynedale Panther Beyonce Fowler has started a scholarship at Loughborough College, where she will combine her A-level studies with rugby development.

It’s a big change for the youngster, who completed her GCSE exams at Hexham’s Queen Elizabeth High School this summer, and celebrated her 17th birthday in September.

But it represents an excellent opportunity for her to work with some of the sport’s leading coaches.

“It was a big decision for her,” said Beyonce’s dad Julian. “But the facilities there in terms of rugby development are incredible. Sarah Hunter, the England women’s captain, is one of the coaches she will be working with, and she’ll also be learning from top nutritionists, as well as strength and conditioning coaches.

“The education is built around the rugby, which is ideal for Beyonce.”

The teenager is studying biology and psychology, with a career focus on becoming a paramedic.

But rugby remains key to her plans, and Beyonce will play college rugby at second team level, while aiming to establish herself at senior level.

In going to Loughborough, Beyonce is following in the footsteps of her former Tynedale Panthers’ teammate, Holly Thorpe.

Last season, Beyonce played for Ryton U18, which reached a national cup semi-final during an outstanding season, losing just one once.

The youngster, who has played at county level, is still registered as a Ryton player, and is also attached to the centre of excellence at Darlington Mowden Park. She is also part of the England Pathway scheme for the development of young players.
