PRUDHOE YC Seniors missed out on on a chance to consolidate their top six position in Northern Alliance Division One after a 2-1 defeat at Seaton Burn.

The red and blacks started brightly, but were unable to convert any of their chances during a fruitful opening 15 minutes.

The Seniors went 2-0 down, but were handed an opportunity to get back into the game during the closing stages.

On the 80-minute mark, Ryan Burnyeat was fouled in the penalty area. Mark McMeekin tucked away the resulting spot kick, but it proved to be only a consolation goal.

Prudhoe YC Seniors club secretary Duncan Graham said: “It was a physical, competitive game, and we started off quite well. But after that first 15 minutes, we struggled to create a great deal.

“It was just one of those days where it didn’t happen for us. We weren’t at our best.

“Seaton Burn deserve credit. They worked very hard and they stopped us from playing our football.

“Perhaps we were intimidated a bit, but it was just an off-day. There’s a lot more to come from this Prudhoe side.”

After eight league matches at the start of the season, the Seniors will get a taste of cup action on Saturday, when they host FC United of Newcastle, in the Reeves Independent George Dobbins League Cup.The match will take place on the 4G surface at Prudhoe High School, at 2pm.

Prudhoe are continuing to share their home ground at Kimberly Park with Newcastle University.

The University side, which won the Northern Alliance Premier Division last season, are now competing in the Northern League Division Two, and will entertain Chester-le-Street at Kimberly Park on Saturday, at 3pm.

Graham added: “We’ll be playing our game on the 4G, but we’re used to that surface so we’re looking forward to getting back into action on Saturday.”
