PONTELAND’S rising golf star celebrated adding another prestigious trophy to her cabinet.

Zara Naughton, a member at the town’s golf club and a pupil at Ponteland High School, won the U14 North Ladies Close Championship, at Silloth, in Cumbria.

While strong winds made for challenging golf, the teenager was in a good position after the opening round.

She stepped things up and some fantastic golf saw her shooting five under par through 15 holes.

An encounter with a gorse bush threatened to curtail her championship pursuit as a couple of dropped shots put her in trouble, but she regained her focus and two strong finishing holes saw her finish the second round on three under par.

As a result of her performances, Zara scooped the U14 championship and received the Liverpool Society Cup, and she was just two shots behind the overall lady champion on the day.

She added her name on to the trophy alongside past Northumberland winners, Jess Baker and Rachel Gourley.

The success is a further feather in the teenager’s bow who is tipped for great things in the sport.
