ONE of the district’s archery clubs is encouraging people to give the sport a try this month.

The Ovingham-based Border Reiver Archers will host a Have a Go session at Tynedale Rugby Club, during the Corbridge Classic Car event, on Sunday, August 18.

The club has grown since it was established in 2012, and now has more than 30 members.

Club member Michael Porter said: “Border Reiver Archers are a friendly, informal group of archery enthusiasts who enjoy the challenge of one of the oldest sports, albeit using some more modern versions of some of the bows.

“Our club members shoot a variety of bow types, mostly recurve, with or without the aid of sights to help with aiming. Shooting without the use of sights is referred to as barebow and is generally more challenging than when using sights, known as freestyle.”

Meanwhile, Prudhoe archer Allison Kelly has been selected to represent the Archery GB team at the World 3D Championships, which will take place in Canada later this month.

The honour follows a successful summer for Allison, who recently excelled at an event in South Wales, which was also a qualifier for next year’s European Championships.

Fellow archer Tracey Leverett said: “Allison is a hardworking, down to earth, inspirational woman who has fought to get where she is.

“We all wish her the very best for this journey.”
