GOLFER Joseph Robson excelled against some of the best youngsters in the North of England.

The Hexham Golf Club member represented Northumberland in a northern counties qualifier, against Cumbria, Durham, Cheshire, Lancashire, and Yorkshire.

Lancashire were the team winners at the event, which took place at Darlington’s Rockliffe Hall Golf Club.

Joseph was the top individual scorer. He shot a one-under par 71 in the first round, and a superb four-under par 68 in the second round.

It’s a busy year for the 18 year old, who is Northumberland county boys’ captain, and is also junior captain at Hexham Golf Club this season.

Joseph, who has represented Northumberland at senior level, currently plays off plus-two, was set to play in the England U18 strokeplay championship, at Saunton in Devon, this week.

The country’s top junior players were also expected to line-up at the event.

Joseph started playing golf at Hexham at the age of seven, notably with his granddad, former Newcastle United and Sunderland footballer Bryan ‘Pop’ Robson.

The ex-striker has long been a single-figure handicapper himself, and used his own skills and experience to help develop Joseph’s golf.

Joseph is also part of the England A regional squad, which receives coaching from Hexham club professional Andy Paisley.
