YOUNG golf star Zara Naughton has been selected to represent England Schools after an impressive performance in Nottingham.

The Ponteland Middle School Pupil, who is a member at Matfen Hall, excelled at the National U18 Schools Golf Championships, at Sherwood Forest Golf Club in Nottingham.

The 13-year-old produced some solid golf around the tricky heathland course over 36 holes, and achieved her goal of finishing in the top six.

It means Zara will line up for England Schools at a home international competition in September.

The trip to Sherwood Forest came after Zara, and Lois Blythe, of Hexham’s Queen Elizabeth High School, led Northumberland to victory at the North of England School Girls Championship, at Denton Golf Club in Manchester, last month. Cramlington’s Rachel Gourley completed the three-girl team.

The North representative team of girls and boys which excelled in Manchester has been named regional team of the year. It also included local youngsters Alex Heppell, Cameron Thoburn, Junior Dobson, and Angus Buchanan.
