TEENAGER Alex Buchanan defended his club championship title at Matfen Hall in fine style.

The 18-year-old carded an impressive opening gross score of 65, which he followed up with a second round of 75 to lift the Burnside Trophy for the second successive year.

Buchanan, who finished nine strokes clear of his nearest challenger, started playing golf at the age of 13. He swiftly reduced his handicap from 28 to plus one, and has now been awarded a scholarship at Harvard University in America, where he will study business alongside developing his golf.

He credited the junior coaching set up at Matfen Hall, as well as the club’s facilities, for assisting his progress in the game of golf.
