CANOEIST Anna-Louise Glendenning narrowly missed out on promotion to the Canoe Slalom Premier Division last weekend.

The national Hexham Canoe Club member went up against top level opponents at the Holmepierrepont National Watersports Centre in Nottingham.

Despite sitting in second place for most of the event, a roll at gate 11 saw her receive an added time penalty and lose the second place position.

However, Anna isn’t letting the mishap deter her confidence. Mother, and Hexham Canoe Club coach, Lorraine Glendenning, said: “She’s going to come back fighting and is absolutely determined to achieve promotion at the earliest opportunity.”

Slalom paddlers are grouped so that they can race others of similar ability, on water that is appropriate to their skill.

Lorraine added: “The Premier Division is a lot more competitive and technical so it improves the overall performance of any competitor massively.”

Anna is again presented with the chance of promotion at Chapel Falls in Wales this weekend before heading to Italy for an international event as well as one week’s training next month.

Hexham Canoe Club are hosting an open day to people of all abilities Saturday, June 8 at Tyne Green from 10am to 3pm.
