STOCKSFIELD U16 are celebrating a league and cup double.
After winning the West Division Cup earlier this month, the side completed the double by winning the Gateshead Youth League.
Facing Killingworth, Stocksfield only needed a draw to win the title, but a Killingworth win would have seen them leapfrog Stocksfield.
After a tense start, Stocksfield’s first big chance came with a free kick just outside the box.
Owen Stubbs struck the ball over the wall high into the top right hand corner- only for the Killingworth goalkeeper to pull off a fine save.
The deadlock was broken when a low cross from Stocksfield struck one of the Killingworth defenders and deflected into the net.
Within 10 minutes, Stocksfield doubled their lead when man-of-the-match Stubbs cut in from the left hand side and hit a looping shot over the keeper.
However, following a good move down the right, Killingworth scored with a low shot from a tight angle to put themselves back in the game late in the first half.
In the second half, Stocksfield enjoyed the lion’s share of the play.
Only a series of outstanding saves from the Killingworth goalkeeper prevented Stocksfield from adding to their lead in the game.
A memorable encounter ended 2-1 confirming Stocksfield as league winners for 2018-19 season
