POWERCHAIR footballers Edward Common and Sam Smith are representing England at the European Nations Cup.

The teenagers are heading to Finland for the tournament, where they will play their opening match against Austria, on Thursday.

England will also take on Northern Ireland, host nation Finland, France, Denmark, and Ireland. They will hope to accumulate sufficient points to reach the knock-out stages, which will take place on Sunday.

Edward, from Hexhamshire, and Sam, of Wylam, both suffer from the muscle-wasting condition, Muscular Dystrophy.

The pair have previously represented their country on the world stage. England finished third at the World Cup in 2017, when Edward was named disabled sportsman of the year at the Sport Tynedale Awards.
