Girl footballers from Ovingham Middle School will be flying the flag for the district when they compete in the finals of a national U11 tournament.

They reached the last eight of the competition by winning the northern regional qualifying event, at St George's Park in Sheffield.

The youngsters were up against schools from big cities, including Manchester and Sheffield, yet they won all six of their games, scoring 15 goals and conceding just two.

Their performance saw them named Team of the Week.

A special mention goes to Bardon Mill Bowes Lyons, who won the Hexham and District Sunday League Division One title with a 2-1 victory over reigning champions Prudhoe Town.

Another special mention goes to Haltwhistle Jubilee, who reached the final of the Tyneside Amateur Shield with a 3-0 semi-final win over Morpeth Town Seniors.

Hexham rower Nick Ryan was part of the Oxford University crew which defeated rivals Cambridge to win the Lightweight Boat Race.

The 19-year-old, a former member of Hexham's Queen Elizabeth Rowing Club, was at the bow of the eight man Blue Boat on London's River Thames.

His performance, which courted national attention, saw Nick named Star of the Week.
