WALLINGTON’S impressive unbeaten run in the Northern Alliance Premier Division came to an end on Saturday.

The Greens went into the game against Alnwick Town having lost just once in the league since September, and they had won seven matches in a row prior to their draw against Seaton Delaval two weeks ago.

But their undefeated record was finally cracked in the closing stages of Saturday’s encounter with Alnwick, when they conceded two late goals to lose 3-2 at Oakford Park.

Wallington took the lead on 25 minutes, when Kyle Reardon picked out Jake Walton with a cross-field ball, and the latter found the net with a strike from 25 yards.

The hosts were buoyed by the goal, and started the second half on the front foot. John Paxton almost doubled their advantage, but couldn’t find the right side of the post with his volley.

Alnwick equalised with a header from a corner, but Wallington stepped up a gear, and looked a threat for the next 20 minutes.

During this period, teenage striker Simon Farrier headed home a long throw from Walton to restore the Greens’ advantage.

With rolling subs permitted in the Northern Alliance, Wallington made five substitutions, and they looked set to win 2-1 with just four minutes to go.

But they conceded two late goals, with the winner coming from another Alnwick corner.

The impressive run may be over, but Wallington will have a chance to get back on track when they play Newcastle University, at Kimberly Park, Prudhoe, on Saturday.
