WYLAM’S two U18 teams contested their fourth and final derby of the season in the Northumberland Girls League.

Wylam Rockettes’ United put their club rivals Wylam Rockettes’ Real to the sword in the most recent previous encounter, and this time Real were on a revenge mission.

Playing with the wind advantage, United managed to force a dozen corners, which were defended with grit and determination by Real’s Anna Harding, Anna Robson and Rosa Edwards, among others.

Real took the lead on the counter-attack, when Emma Boaden cleverly turned in a low hard cross to the front post, and Hannah Dodgeon drifted in off the right wing to calmly slot the ball home.

United pulled a goal back before Georgia Briggs fired home to give Real a 3-1 half time lead.

United came fast out of the traps and scored early in the second half, but Briggs scored her second, a spectacular left foot shot from outside the box, to restore Real’s two goal cushion.

During an end-to-end spell of play, United notched their third but Real responded with a Sophie Rogers piledriver from the edge of the box, which went in off the underside of the crossbar.

There was still enough time for United to score again to make it 5-4 and give Real a tense final three minutes before they could claim the three points and the bragging rights.

Coach Sean Hamilton said: “As an interesting footnote, the referee announced that it was the first time in 20 years of officiating that he’d not given a free kick during a game for a foul ,which was testament to the excellent spirit in which the game was played.”

Wylam Rockettes U14 were defeated away at league leaders Blyth Town Wildcats, although Keira Beck was unlucky not to score for the Rockettes when her free kick hit the crossbar.

Keeper Katie Smith was Wylam’s girl of the game.
