HALTWHISTLE Jubilee’s high-flying season suffered a setback when they crashed out of the Neville Cowey League Cup on Saturday.

The Tyneside Amateur league side went down 4-1 at home to Swalwell Juniors.

The defeat was a rare blip for the Jubes, who have enjoyed a free-scoring season so far, and put nine goals past Wallsend the previous week.

Manager Cameron Bell said: “After an impressive run of results we got a harsh lesson today as we went down 4-1.

“Mistakes were made during the game but ultimately the defeat came after we were second best all over the pitch.”

Scott Jacobsen was man of the match for Haltwhistle, whose consolation came courtesy of an own goal.

The Jubes have no time to dwell on the game, for they have another quarter final on Saturday.

Their home ground, the Burn, will host the Tyneside Amateur Challenge Shield match against Ponteland United Reserves.

The tie will have heightened significance for both sides, who are league title rivals this season.

Ponteland are top of the Tyneside Amateur League table, with 37 points from 16 matches.

Haltwhistle currently sit in third place, with 31 points. However, they have four games in hand over United.

Bell said the match would he a huge test of his side’s character.

Ponteland have enjoyed an unbeaten start to 2019 in the league.

They followed up a 0-0 draw with Morpeth Town Seniors, on January 5, with a 3-2 win over Newcastle Chemfica Amateurs last weekend.

Both Haltwhistle and Ponteland have lost just once in the league so far this season.
