PRUDHOE YC Seniors were convincing 3-0 winners against Winlaton Vulcans in the Northern Alliance Division One.

Playing away from home, the confident young Prudhoe side started the game on the front foot.

In the second minute, defender Kieran Russel got his head on to a cross from a free kick, but his effort was tipped on to the crossbar.

On 16 minutes, David Burns fired wide from a 15-yard volley, following a good pass from Harry Mitchell.

Shortly afterwards, Sam Dibb-Fuller smashed the crossbar with a thunderbolt free kick from 30 yards out.

Then the Winlaton goalkeeper was forced into a save following a Prudhoe counter attack. Jordan Phillips led the breakaway and supplied Dibb-Fuller who came close to scoring.

It was Prudhoe’s keeper, Mark Clark, who was called into action five minutes later, as Winlaton created their first real chance of the game.

Prudhoe’s reward did not come until early in the second half. On 55 minutes, teenager Dibb-Fuller ran onto a through ball from Luke Banks, and slotted the ball past the keeper.

The Seniors doubled their advantage on 62 minutes. Following a good move, Burns spread the ball to Banks, who supplied a superb cross for Russel to head home from six yards.

Banks scored a memorable goal on 78 minutes. Taking a left-wing corner, he swung the ball, right-footed, directly into the net to make it 3-0. Prudhoe secretary Duncan Graham said Russel was awarded the man of the match award for a superb defensive display, and also for his confidently taken headed goal.

He added: “We are over the moon with the performance because they are above us in the league, and we were away from home.

“There was a lot of confidence in the way we played, and we converted the chances we created.”

Prudhoe are now sixth in the league table, with 31 points from 17 games. They are one place, and two points, behind Winlaton, having played one game more.

Graham added: “We’ve been on a good run but it takes a lot to climb the league table. It’s good that we’ve been getting the points but we must keep going in pursuit of more.”

Prudhoe travel to Seaton Burn on Saturday, in the semi-finals of the Team Valley Carpets Combination Cup.
