KART racer and budding commentator Kai Bachini has impressed judges to win a national commentary competition.
The Stocksfield youngster wowed an expert panel including the BBC’s John Murray and former BBC Newcastle reporter Vicki Sparks with his commentary of the women’s 4x100m relay at the European Athletics Championships.
The 11-year-old travelled to BBC5Live studios in Salford on Friday to be presented with the award. His mother Kate Taylor said: “We had an inkling that Kai would win but he didn’t think he stood a chance, especially as one of the youngest entrants.”
After a crash ruled Kai out of the Larkhall Super One kart racing Championship in May, he was still determined to visit.
And when Downforce Radio’s Jake Sanson appealed for a co-commentator, Kai jumped at the chance. Mrs Taylor added: “Kai is Formula One through and through but commentating wasn’t something he’d considered, it was always racing. Once he started he took to it straight away and it went from there.”
The youngster has since built up a reputation for commentating after earning a role at Downforce Radio and interviewing his fellow competitors.
