Five-year-old Oliver Macklam is receiving proton radiotherapy at a specialist hospital in Florida.
After being diagnosed with a rare ependymoma tumour he underwent 10 hours of brain surgery at the RVI, before being cared for in intensive care and Warb 1B.
His dad David Macklam has been joined by supporters in cycling, walking or running the 4,154-mile distance between Newcastle and Jacksonville to raise money for the ward at the RVI, as well as two children’s charities - Clic Sargent and The Sick Children’s Trust.
And for their school sports day last week, pupils at Broomley First School, where Oliver attends, along with parents and staff, each ran a mile together to add to David’s mile count, and asked for sponsors to raise money.
The school collected over £200 in donations on the day, with more sponsorship money still to come in.
