Officers were called to the crash at just before 11.30am on Sunday which involved a blue Ford Fiesta and an 85-year-old woman on Callerton Lane, Ponteland.
A spokesman from Northumbria Police said the woman was taken to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
The road was closed for an hour while emergency services attended.
Inquiries are ongoing and anyone who saw what happened is being asked to contact police.
Any witnesses, particularly those who might have dash cam footage, are asked to call 101 quoting log 490 15/07/18.
