A small goat caused traffic to come to a standstill at a busy motorway junction in West Yorkshire.

The rogue animal was spotted darting among vehicles between junctions 28 and 29 of the M62 near the Lofthouse interchange, halting traffic until it was caught on Saturday night.

Minster FM radio host Ben Fry said he was caught in the jam for around 45 minutes.

“Everything ground to a halt,” he told the PA news agency.

“I was instantly amused that a goat managed to close one of the busiest junctions in the country.

“I guess the moral is never be surprised what will cause a problem on the M62.”

Mr Fry said police were driving up and down the motorway looking for the animal, while many motorists got out of their cars to help capture it.

He filmed the goat as it ran past “out of nowhere” on the opposite side of the carriageway, while his wife, who was in a separate vehicle further ahead in the traffic jam, saw it “shoot out in front” of her car.

Highways England said the goat was captured, announcing on Twitter that traffic was released again just before 9pm.

Mr Fry, who is also York’s official town crier, shared a video of the goat to Twitter.

“It was amazing, as soon as I posted it on Twitter there was loads of people replying, ‘oh, that’s why we’re stuck’,” he said.

“Then all the goat puns started… you’ve got to be kidding.”
